Dream Theater Wins “Best Metal Performance” For The Alien At the 2022 Grammy Awards

Dream Theater Wins “Best Metal Performance” For The Alien

John Petrucci Acceptance Speech for Grammy Winner For “The Alien”

Dream Theater was honored at the 64th annual Grammy awards held last night April 3, 2022 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and received the award as the winner in the “Best Metal Performance” category for the song, “The Alien” from the band’s “A View From The Top Of The World” LP. Dream Theater’s win this year is of particular and great significance now that the award nominee selection process is executed with greater transparency than in past ceremonies. Previously to this year, the academy had “secret committees,” that made their nomination selection from artists they had an association with, rather than on an artist’s merit. Thanks to Deborah Dugan, a former Academy CEO, who in January 2020, filed a discrimination complaint against the Recording Academy of Arts and Sciences for her reporting of voting corruption within the academy, the 2022 Academy artist nominee selection is now a voting process from the Academy’s 12,000 members. Academy artist nominee selections are now made up of a collection of artists who have been nominated based solely on their merits, which opens up the doorway for bands like Dream Theater who have proven time and time again that they have easily earned the right to not only be nominated for a Grammy but truly deserve to win based on their achievements; it’s about time!

Dream Theater’s guitarist John Petrucci accepted the award on behalf of the band stating; “Wow” This is absolutely insane! Checkout the video of Petrucci’s acceptance speech below:

DREAM THEATER’S previous Grammy nominations were for the song “On The Backs Of Angels,” from their 2011 “A Dramatic Turn Of Events” album, and the single “The Enemy Inside” from their 2013 album, “Dream Theater.”

When “The Alien” was first released in August 2021, Petrucci stated; This is the first song we wrote together for the LP “A View From The Top Of The World” and it’s an adventure with it’s unconventional structure, the heaviness and the hooks. The lyrics that were written by singer James La Brie tells a story of terraforming a new world and looking beyond earth for new settlements, with the human race as “The Alien” ; I thought it was cool and creative lyrics by James.
